Decontamination of Wastewater
Containing Explosive and Organic Wastes
Nitroglycerin mitigation at Naval Surface Warfare Center
Indian Head, Maryland
- Designed, fabricated and operated a microbial treatment system
for treating wastewater containing nitroglycerin (NG) and acetone.
- Used Tetrahedron's own microbes (Tetrabac) and nutrients (Tetranute-1)
to accomplish the task.
- The waste was generated by a Naval Production Facility in Maryland.
Reduced concentration of NG down from 255 ppm to non-detect (<0.2
ppm).
Reduced concentration of acetone to non-detect levels.
- Ensured safety by selecting material of construction and developed
operating procedures for the treatment system that passed the
strict hazard evaluation criteria set by the U.S. Navy.
